The usual shorthand says higher interest rates should make risky assets uncomfortable. Bitcoin refused to follow that one-line script on June 16, rising after the Bank of Japan increased rates.
CoinDesk reported a move from around $65,600 in Asian trading to above $66,500 during European hours. That extended a recovery from the early-June low below $60,000. The Economic Times also described improving sentiment and a rebound, while noting that institutional participation remained uneven.
A rebound is not an all-clear
There is no contradiction in a market rising on the day of a rate increase. Prices respond to what was expected, how investors were positioned and what else changed—not simply whether a central bank moved a number up or down.
CoinDesk’s report pointed to returning derivatives activity and reduced fear. The Economic Times highlighted whale accumulation, institutional buying and easing geopolitical concerns. Those observations suggest a mix of influences rather than proof that Japan’s decision itself caused the rally.
The confirmed development was a recovery in bitcoin and several major altcoins. Whether that recovery could hold was a separate question. A better session did not erase the earlier drawdown, and traders still had to distinguish renewed risk appetite from a durable change in market conditions.
