Washington handed crypto a concrete result on May 14: the Senate Banking Committee voted 15–9 to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. The committee’s own announcement confirms the vote. Reuters reported that two Democrats joined Republicans in moving the measure forward.

Bitcoin climbed above $80,000 during the session, Bloomberg reported. It was an understandable response to progress on a bill intended to clarify which regulators oversee different parts of the digital-asset market.

A committee win is not the finish line

The vote did not enact the legislation. The measure still faced the full Senate and the work of reconciling overlapping jurisdiction, including the Agriculture Committee’s role in commodity regulation. Reuters also noted that support in committee did not guarantee support on the floor.

That is where the bullish shorthand can get ahead of the facts. Clearer rules could reduce uncertainty for exchanges and other businesses, but a successful markup is not the same thing as a signed statute, an implemented rule or an endorsement of any particular token.

The milestone is confirmed. The eventual shape and timing of a final law remained unresolved on the date of the vote. Investors could welcome the progress without pretending the remaining negotiations had disappeared.
