CONFIRMED: Management announced an expected mining exit. Completion remains a future milestone.
Core Scientific is telling investors something fairly blunt: the Bitcoin-mining chapter is supposed to end this year. Bitcoin Magazine reported management’s plan to finish the wind-down in the fourth quarter and enter 2027 as a high-density colocation provider. CoinPasar’s weekly digest separately described the same planned exit. This is not merely an analyst guessing what a rebrand might mean.
The revenue mix explains the confidence. Bitcoin Magazine reported $215.4 million in colocation revenue out of $232.9 million in total third-quarter revenue, or roughly 92%. Self-mining brought in $12.3 million, with another $5.2 million from hosted mining. CoinPasar combined those mining lines into $17.5 million. The figures reconcile once the categories are kept intact.
A plan is still a plan
The company expects to complete the exit. It has not already completed it merely because management announced the target. That sounds obvious until a short social headline drops the future tense. Mining equipment, hosting contracts and site conversions all have operational timetables. Readers should watch the final shutdown and subsequent accounts, not mistake an earnings-call commitment for a historical event.
For the Bitcoin network, one company’s retreat also does not automatically imply a collapse in aggregate computing power. Equipment can move, competitors can expand and difficulty can adjust. The corporate story is about where this particular operator believes it can earn more from its infrastructure. The network-wide outcome requires separate data rather than extrapolation from one recognizable ticker.
For shareholders, the new questions concern delivery, customer concentration, financing and the economics of colocation capacity. Those are not necessarily easier questions than the mining ones; they are different. The rumor that miners might become data-center landlords now has a tangible example in the numbers. The remaining test is execution. Core Scientific says it wants a cleaner business in 2027. Switching off the last mining machines and delivering the contracted infrastructure are the receipts investors should ask to see.
