Mastercard opened early access to Agent Pay for Machines on October 20, giving developers tools for software that buys digital services inside a business-approved budget. The company demonstrated the system at Cloudflare Connect; Decrypt separately reported the release.

The important word is approved. This is not a proposal to let a chatbot spend without limits. The system ties purchases to permissions and funding set by a business, then uses the x402 payment flow to let an agent obtain services without opening a separate account for every provider.

A voucher is not the final settlement

In the demonstrated model, an agent signs a payment voucher after a service requests payment. The seller verifies the voucher and delivers; vouchers can be combined and redeemed later. That separates machine-speed authorization from the movement of settled funds.

Mastercard identified Coinbase wallet infrastructure, Base settlement and BVNK’s role in fiat or stablecoin settlement in the demonstration. Stablecoin Insider’s October 21 analysis examined that division of labor. Support for a stablecoin leg does not mean every purchase is immediately settled onchain, or that every seller must keep a token balance.

Developer APIs, a sandbox and a working pilot are concrete progress for agent-to-agent and machine-service commerce. They do not answer every commercial question. The early-access announcement did not supply a general availability date or a complete public schedule of fees and dispute rules. Before delegating a real operating budget, a finance team needs those terms just as much as an agent needs a wallet.
